Massine

Project – Massine Making music improvisation more accessible

Massinei is a tool to influence music around you by dancing to control sound effect filters. Special movements trigger effects on other instruments. This is demonstrated with movements that change the scale from major to blues on a snare instrument called WOODD, made by other first-year ID students.

It is part of the group music improvisation system (GMIS) project, which has the goal to explore the possibilities of system design using the inspiration from music inspiration.ii

I appreciated the explorative nature of this project. The project I did in my B1.1 was more restricted and structured. I think that such a project is good for a first semester, but the freedom offered in GMIS gave me the opportunity to develop in a wide range of competencies, most notably Design Process, Form & Senses, User Focus & Perspective and Integrating Technology among others.iii

“Your group decided on the concept quite early in the process which gave you time to make several iterations. You used this time well and step by step further developed your concept. … The final result is a curious, engaging and beautifully crafted object. You emphasized the ‘ethnic’ look nicely by making a matching video and images. Your project has a distinctive character. The way the object reacts to movement is still not ideal and should be further developed to be more intuitive, as you point out in your reflections.”iv
