Basic course – Physics Report Applying physics in a design context

Last semester I passed the basic course Physics. Although it is nice to know the theory, the real value of this course was making a physics report about a typical Industrial Design problem. In my past showcase I hoped to “use nature laws in my advantage to create more durable prototypes”. This reporti was an important step to that goal.

I analyzed my project from past semester, Ekk Bounce, on aspects as energy use and durability of the used materials. It was really useful to learn how to calculate and improve the energy use of the system. The research was based on a lot of assumptions, for example the energy use of several components. The reliability of the results improves if I could extract more information out of sources like datasheets and measurements.

” You managed to apply several aspects of the theory discussed during the lectures and did so in detail.ii … Your reflection also shows that you understand how physics is positioned within an Industrial Design project and can support your design process.”

M.H. Wetzels – Physics tutor

I used these lessons for my B1.2 project, calculating the energy use of the prototype to select the best battery for this wireless object. The result was lightweight and had sufficient battery life to survive the Demo Days.
