Basic course – USE History and ethics of engineering

The USE base course is about the history of engineering and ethical issues engineers have to deal with in their work. I found this course really interesting, especially the assignment to create a technological dreami, in my case a system using artificial intelligence to help doctors in setting a faster and more accurate diagnosis.

During the research about the possible consequences of this dream for society, I learnt about balancing the interests of stakeholders. For example the protection of medical data for patient’s privacy, versus using the data to improve the automatic diagnosis system. I also learnt how to identify ethical problems and solving them using theories like utilitarianism and Kantianism.

These skills and lessons from history help me in critically look at concepts and prevent the creation of a ‘technological nightmare’ in my future work.
