Grass roller by Mattia Casalegno

SDL – The Green Light District Surprising designs for a greener world

The Green Light District shows smart green revolutions by scientists, artists and entrepreneurs. I went to this exhibition in the Budafabriek to get inspired and develop my vision on design. The subject is related with it and I used my experiences there to make my vision more specific.

There were some works that were especially interesting. For example the Grass Roller by Mattia Casalegno. It is a big installation with the function to make people experience the feeling of rolling in grass. The object combines the sense of being connected with nature, with technology that fakes this ‘authentic’ experience. Another work I appreciated was Kangaroo gives Volt by Martin uit den Bogaard. He combines science with art by getting electricity out of dead animals and turns this into music and images. Next to these works TU/e Industrial Design was present as well, showing the works of Next Nature’s nano supermarket.

All of them have in common that they are provocative and a conversation starter. They made me think about the relation of humans and nature. That’s something I want to achieve in my designs as well, although I am not sure if nature would be the main theme of my work.
