Descriptive & Mathematical Modeling Modeling as a support for coding

In the past I found it difficult to relate this competence to a design process. After doing the basic course Modelingi and applying models in different stages of the project I now have a better idea of what this competency can mean for me as a designer.

It helped for example in writing codeĀ for movement recognition in the project. Bart and I abstracted movements into concepts relating to the different sensor values and checked our assumptions with measurements. Based on this Bart wrote the code to recognize for example a jump, which is characterized by a pattern of peaks in the z-axis of the accelerometer.ii

On a conceptual scale modeling can be used as a ideation tool, as I saw in the workshop System Thinking for Designers. Models also help in communicating how a concept works, for example this descriptive model of my B1.2 project.

System model

Descriptive model of the system Massine is part of together with other projects in GMIS, for example WOODD.
